Porsche 911 991 GT3RS Wheel Performance

The pinnacle of factory Porsche street legal track cars are being held back by the factory 991 GT3RS wheel setup. The use of a 21” rear wheel significantly hurts tire selection with barely anything available other than Cup 2’s. We aim to solve this through a lightweight set of chassis specific Apex Forged VS-5RS or EC-7RS. There are numerous fitment combinations that will improve overall performance and open up a number of tire compound choices to better fit your needs. All of these can be seen over on our Porsche 911 991.1 and 991.2 GT3RS & GT2RS Fitment Guide.

A Brief History of the 991 GT3RS & GT2RS

The third generation of GT3RS was unveiled at the Geneva motor show in 2015. While we offer a selection of wheels for the 991.1 and 991.2 GT3RS and GT2RS, let’s dive into what makes these products of Weissach so special. The 991.1 GT3RS came with a number of lightweight treatments. Some of which are a magnesium roof, standard clubsport package (in Europe), lightweight door pulls, and the carbon bucket seats. Also back for the first time since the legendary 997 RS 4.0, we got a 4.0L engine back in a 911 with horsepower up to 493. Redline was reduced to 8,800 rpm compared to the “standard” GT3’s 9,000. The 991.2 3RS came with revised aerodynamics and the updated 4.0L engine from the GT3 only now with more tweaks to get power up to 513 horsepower. Much of the suspension is now rose jointed to make the suspension more direct. The new Weissach pack option from the GT2RS is available here for the first time. Magnesium wheels with carbon fiber roof, hood, and sway bars are included in this new package all in an effort to reduce weight even further.

The GT2RS was the pinnacle of speed for the 991 generation. It utilized a 3.8L twin turbo flat six making 700hp. At the time, this was the fastest Porsche road car to ever lap the Nurburgring, beating out the 918 Spyder and GT3RS. This was the first model to be offered with the aforementioned Weissach package. With the overlap of GT2RS and GT3RS production the magnesium wheels were prioritized for the GT2RS pushing back some of the production dates for the GT3RS.

Why We Think It's a Good Track Car

These are the pinnacle of Porsche track cars. From the suspension tuning, cooling, and lower weight these are ready for whatever track day you plan to throw at them. With all the same benefits from the standard GT3 like the dry sump oiling system to the factory adjustable coilover suspension. The RS variants also came with slightly wider bodywork than your GT3 to allow for even wider wheels and tires. There are numerous companies out there offering suspension packages to tailor the car more to track use as well as exhaust and intake modifications to improve the efficiency of the engine. Wheels are a great option for someone looking to further improve their lap times, not only by reducing unsprung weight from the standard aluminum wheels but also opening up the choice to run other more dedicated track tires. We have a number of wheel fitments for the 991.1 and 991.2 GT3RS and GT2RS. Be sure to check out our Porsche 911 991 GT2RS & GT3RS Wheel & Tire Fitment Guide.

Fitment Help

Which Wheels Should I Get?

Check out our Fitment Guides, the most in-depth, authoritative guides for wheel and tire fitments, tailored for your vehicle and how you drive it.

EC-7RS Features

10K Tons of Pressure

Our new forgings weigh as much as 120 pounds before machining. To form such a thick blank we require special equipment capable of 10,000 metric tons of pressure. This extreme pressure increases the strength of the aluminum by eliminating porosity and improving the grain structure.

True Motorsport Blanks

Many companies use 3rd-party blanks intended for non-motorsport wheels which can severely limit sizes, concavity, spoke design, and critical brake clearance. We designed our very own blank profiles from scratch to give us total control over the final product.

Side-Milled Spokes

One of the most significant upgrades to the EC-7RS is the addition of wider and deeper side-milled spokes. Any excess material that doesn’t add strength is carved out using a precision CNC ball cutter. Side-milling is often deemed cost-prohibitive by others, but for true performance without compromise we believe it's essential.

A Stronger Lightweight Wheel

Our forged Sprint™ wheels are lightweight without the strength compromises found on typical lightweight wheels. First, we carved out as much material as possible, then we purposefully added one pound back to reinforce critical areas, creating a stronger inner lip and a higher load rating.² What’s the point of a lightweight wheel if it’s fragile?

Weight Optimized

We conducted extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to reinforce high-stress areas and to remove material where it didn’t improve strength. The result is a wheel that is exceptionally light without the strength compromises found on typical lightweight wheels.²

Independently Tested

We don't rely solely on computer simulations or unverifiable in-house testing. We believe independent testing is critical to protect consumers in this unregulated industry. We chose STL, an independent lab in Ohio, to test our Sprint™ wheels far above JWL standards, including increases in testing duration, impact drop height, and total load.

Tougher Inner Lip

Introducing the Sprint™ spec inner lip, with a unique channel profile that makes it even stronger than our previous designs. So even though our Sprint™ wheels are pounds lighter than comparable flow formed wheels, the inner lip is stronger.

Big Brake Clearance

From day one, APEX has been on a mission to build wheels that clear big brakes. Our new forged wheels are the product of everything we’ve developed over the past 10+ years, including an innovative high-clearance barrel design and vehicle-specific spoke profiles.

Deeper Concavity

Our new forgings were redesigned to create extra deep, concave spoke profiles. Their new shape allows us to make any profile, from flat to deep and everything in between. Each one is optimized for a specific application using 3D laser scans of factory and aftermarket brake kits.

Paintless Knurled Bead

Whether it's a day at the track or months of street driving, repeated hard braking and acceleration can make a tire slip along the bead seat and go out of balance, causing vibration. Knurled beads help, but are less effective when painted over. Our forged line features unpainted knurled beads that stay sharp and maximize grip.

Built for Impact Sockets

Track wheels need track tools. Don’t settle for wheels that require undersized tuner lugs or thin walled sockets. All APEX wheels accommodate over-sized race lugs and impact sockets to make swapping wheels lightning fast.

Laser-Engraved Specs

As track enthusiasts ourselves, we know how frustrating it is to try to locate and decipher wheel specs that have been hastily hammered into the rim or become unreadable over time. With our new Sprint™ wheels, we chose to invest a little extra and laser-engrave the specs on the barrel, in plain sight, making them easy to find and read. (You’re welcome.)

Additional Features

Hub Centric

All EC-7RS wheels are purpose built for select vehicle applications. Very few applications require centering rings.
