A Brief History of the 2015-2023 Ford Mustang

The S550 Mustang has gone global! Building on the success of the previous generation by modernizing its new chassis, the 6th Generation Mustang was introduced in the 2015 model year, running through 2023. It saw many models including the mainstay V6, GT and newly introduced Ecoboost 4 cylinder, with additional special editions such as the Bullit & Mach 1. Despite the massive body and suspension changes, the S550 shares nearly identical wheel fitments with the previous S197 generation.

What Makes it a Good Track Car

The biggest news when the S550 launched was Ford’s decision to finally move on from the solid rear axle, going to a fully independent rear suspension. This was the first time every model didn’t have a big stick axle behind them, and the first time since the SN-95 Cobras for any submodel. While first being met with skepticism from traditionalists who watched poorly driven test cars perform slower than the outgoing model, the S550 as a whole quickly proved its radical redesign was worth the initial drama. In 2021, Ford announced the anticipated return of the Mach 1 nameplate. As with previous Mach 1 iterations, they didn’t just slap some badges on it and call it a day. The S550 Mach 1 featured a revised intake system with more power, the beautifully smooth Tremec TR-3160 from the GT350 (with optional 10 speed automatic), and subframe/suspension components from the Shelby models. This is likely the final special submodel of the S550 platform, with the S650 set to debut as a 2024 model year car.
