Honda 9th Gen Civic Wheel Performance

The 9th Gen Civic was more evolution than revolution when compared to its predecessor. As had become standard among the Civic line there were normal models, hybrid variants, and the spicier Civic Si. While the Civic Si boasted a standard 17-inch wheel with a somewhat sporty tire, the wheel performance of these vehicles leaves a bit to be desired by today's standards. Many owners look to go to a 9-inch wide wheel in either 17” or 18” which our Flow Formed VS-5 and Forged ML-10RT provide. Whether you’re more interested in a 17x9” ET35 for weight savings or an 18x9” ET35 for a sharper look, we have an option for you. Check out our Honda 9th Gen Civic Wheel & Tire Fitment Guide to find the perfect setup for your 9th Gen Civic.

History of the 9th Gen Civic

The 9th Gen Honda Civic was an exercise in taking what worked with the previous car and refining it. While some might argue that refinement came at the expense of some excitement, the 9th Gen Civic was still a class-leading compact car. With the Si, Honda dropped in a K24 variant, offering almost another half-liter of displacement over the outgoing K20. While the days of revving out to 8000RPM were behind us, the increased displacement and torque made for a motor that offered stronger midrange and a better street driving feel for those who didn’t want to drive around town at the rev limit. In true Honda fashion, a great 6-speed manual transmission remained the sole Civic Si pairing as well as the factory limited-slip differential alongside it. Whether owners were looking for a sporty coupe, reliable sedan, or a combination of the two, there was a version of the 9th Gen Honda Civic for everyone.

This generation of Honda Civic was kicked off with the 2012 model year and unfortunately, that year left quite a bit to be desired. Although the previous generation car pumped up the premium features, some argued that the increased pricepoint was taking away from what a Civic was meant to be, so Honda leaned out the first year of the 9th Gen. After mixed reception to the changes, Honda did a 180 for the following 2013 model year. Finally, for the 2014 model year, the coupes received a significant facelift to the point where it’s almost an entirely different car. For those shopping sedans, skip the 2012. For those shopping coupes, make a beeline for the 2014 and 2015 models.

Why We Like This Car

The 9th Gen Honda Civic Si is the last bastion of naturally aspirated Honda performance. While it may be a bit more mild than its predecessor, it still offers a strong base chassis for enthusiasts interested in a fun street car or a simple track car. Three pedals, LSD, and reliable NA horsepower are hard to argue with. Add in the choice of a coupe or a sedan, and now owners can choose their own blend of convenience versus sporty aesthetics. It’s a tried and true formula.

Whether you’re looking for improved performance or a new aesthetic for your vehicle, our wide selection of 9th Gen Civic Wheels has got you covered.

VS-5 features

Iconic 5-spoke Design

The VS-5 brings the aggressive look of our iconic forged VS-5RS to a flow-formed wheel. At a fraction of the price of its forged sibling, VS-5 punches well above its weight and maximizes the performance potential of a flow-formed wheel. With nearly two decades of experience perfecting track-ready flow-formed wheels, we engineered the VS-5 to deliver Real Performance at an unbeatable value.

Pushing the Boundaries of Flow-Formed Manufacturing

With a strength-to-weight ratio and features typically reserved for forged wheels, the VS-5 pushes the boundaries of flow-formed manufacturing to the max. Weighing only ~2-2.5 lbs more than its forged sibling, the VS-5 isn’t just a top tier option in the flow-formed space, it’s a wheel we consider the last step in performance before leveling up to a forged design.

The Flow Form Advantage

Flow-forming enables us to create high performance wheels without the price premium of forging. It improves the mechanical properties and grain structure of the barrel, increasing its strength and stiffness, which allows us to use less material and reduce weight. Thanks to our superior engineering, our flow-formed wheels have a higher load rating than some competitors' forged wheels.

Side-Milled Spokes

A critical part of VS-5’s remarkable weight-savings, side-milled spokes also help with its stunning looks. The VS-5 features advanced side-milled spokes that have any excess material that doesn’t add strength removed from the sides of the spokes via precision CNC ball cutter. This process is often deemed cost-prohibitive by others, but for performance without compromise, we believe it's essential.

Bigger, Tougher Inner Lip

The inner lip is the most vulnerable part of a wheel because it has no spokes for support. Our flow-formed Evolution Line adds more material to this vulnerable area as an added layer of protection against impact from  track berms, potholes, and whatever else the road may throw at you.

Maximizing Concavity

We use the deepest concave face profiles we can for every application. The VS-5 utilizes 3 unique profiles to deliver the deepest concave face possible, helping to reduce weight and provide a stunningly aggressive appearance, while factoring in critical clearances like brake calipers.

Big Brake Clearance

Big brakes often require bigger, heavier, more expensive wheels, which aren’t ideal for performance. Leveraging our expansive library of 3D brake scans, VS-5’s spoke profiles are specifically designed around critical OE and aftermarket brake calipers. Additionally, Apex flow-formed wheels are designed with a unique 0-degree draft barrel for maximum caliper barrel clearance.

Weight Optimized

We conducted extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to reinforce high-stress areas and remove any extra material where it didn’t improve strength. The result is a wheel that is exceptionally light without the strength compromises typically found on lightweight wheels.²

Built for Impact Sockets

Track wheels require track tools. Don’t settle for wheels that require undersized tuner lugs or thin walled sockets. All Apex wheels accommodate over-sized race lugs and impact sockets to make swapping wheels lightning fast.

Finishing Touches

The VS-5 is finished using a multi-stage liquid paint over a powder coated base coat. This coating process leaves lug holes, center bores and mounting pads untouched, which ensures proper fit and torque values.

JWL and Beyond

All Apex Flow Formed wheels meet or meaningfully exceed JWL load rating requirements. Some manufacturers don't meet the minimum requirements, yet still claim to be compliant. Always compare load ratings to ensure you aren’t sacrificing critical strength for a slightly lighter wheel.

Additional features

Hub Centric

VS-5 wheels are purpose built for select vehicle applications. Very few applications require centering rings.

Center Caps

All Apex wheels come with our gloss black cap included. Unlike its forged counterpart, the VS-5 has limited OE cap support. However, we also offer additional colors for select fitments.

Wheel Hardware

Apex wheels can be used with all OEM mounting hardware, proper aftermarket hardware and most wheel spacers. Wheel locks and stud conversion kits also work perfectly.

TPMS

All Apex wheels accept OEM and aftermarket Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors and standard fit valve stems. If you don’t have sensors, then select from our metal stems available in multiple finishes.

Accessories
