New 19” Porsche Race Wheels From APEX Race Parts

Article | 10/03/2020 by Brandon Kimbell

For years, Porsche drivers have wanted a better selection of lightweight, race-proven wheels at affordable prices. As an initial response, APEX Race Parts first launched a diverse line of 18″ SM-10 flow formed wheels engineered specifically for 996 and 997 911 chassis, as well as all generations of the Cayman/Boxster platform. More recently, a line of 18” EC-7R forged wheels has emerged offering hardcore track enthusiasts and club racers even more strength through higher load ratings, as well as premium features and finish options. Today both 18” designs are a common sight on Porsches in the paddock at your local race track, including a growing number of Spec Cayman and GTB1 cars.

However, newer models like the GT4 and 991 911, with larger brakes and new suspension geometry, require 19″ wheels or larger. Owners are often faced with either paying an exorbitant amount of money for custom wheel solutions, or significantly compromising quality and performance with conservative off-the-shelf options. That’s all about to change.

APEX is set to release 19″ Porsche-specific wheels in the popular SM-10 design, enabling GT4 and 991 drivers (among many others) to benefit from the features and value that APEX is known for (check out the list of new fitments at the bottom of the page).

Here are just a few of the features that set our new Porsche race wheels apart:

– Multiple Porsche chassis-specific widths and offsets to optimize performance and support popular track/race tire compounds. – Wheel design and spoke curvatures based on in-depth studies of each chassis, and numerous laser scans of factory brakes. – Ability to clear all factory and aftermarket brakes tested (except GT4/991 410mm carbon ceramics. See section below). – “I” beam spokes that remove unnecessary material and weight. – Knurled beading reducing unwanted tire slippage. – True VIA certification and independent testing with load ratings that meet JWL requirements. – Manufacturing that uses toolings built exclusively for Porsche production, which means no compromises. – Porsche specific 5×130” bolt pattern and 71.6mm hub bore for a hub-centric fitment – Designed to accept OEM Porsche crest center caps and factory wheel hardware. – Stocked on the shelves in healthy quantities to ensure you have wheels when you need them most.

WHEEL REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

These wheels are covered under APEX’s famous no-questions-asked wheel replacement policy. If you damage a wheel in any way, such as curb rash, off-track excursions, potholes, or berms, you only pay 50% of the replacement cost. See full terms and conditions for details.

Exhaustive 3D laser scanning and on-car fitment testing ensured these wheels cleared as many factory and aftermarket brakes as possible.

THE TRUTH ABOUT 19 INCH WHEELS THAT ‘CLEAR’ 410MM CARBON BRAKES

During the engineering phase, APEX focused on the challenge of clearing as many factory and aftermarket brakes as possible. New barrels were designed from scratch in an all-out effort to clear the massive 410mm Porsche Carbon Ceramic front brakes found on select GT4 and 991 911 chassis. While the designed barrels did technically clear the front calipers, the tolerance was so tight that it was inappropriate to consider it a safe solution for customers. This was initially seen as a setback because other manufacturers claimed to clear the PCCBs, laser scans and analysis clearly indicated that the most clearance any 19″ wheel could ever have is only a small sliver of space.

Further investigation revealed drivers running aftermarket 19″ wheels with 410mm PCCBs often experienced significant damage to their very expensive calipers from direct barrel contact or debris due to the lack of clearance. It appeared to be a fundamental design issue that couldn’t be solved to our satisfaction with 19″ wheels, therefore, we shifted our resources to create the best solutions in the market for all other brake applications. APEX will follow up with 20” wheel fitments for PCCB equipped cars that require them.
